Jessica Marshall is a Melbourne based writer, director and illustrator.

 

She has been writing since the age of six when she made up a story from her cat’s perspective on what it must look like to watch a human put on pants. She has been published in The Sunday Age, Dumbo Feather, Frankie, Peephole and Sight and Sound and was also editor for Monash University’s Lot’s Wife Magazine. She has written and directed short films and documentaries several of which have screened in competition including MUFFThe Girls on Film Festival, and Conduit Media.

 

Jessica has a Master of Fine Arts: Writing for Performance from NIDA. Her scripts have been shortlisted for many awards, including the Academy Nicholl, Sir Peter Ustinov Screenwriting Award, Monte Miller Award and others. She has had radio plays aired on ABC radio, and has a romantic comedy feature optioned with Leanne Tonkes of Sense and Centsability that is currently in development.

She has worked in the script department for many hit shows, such as Jack Irish (ABC/Essential Media), The WrongGirl (Ch10/Playmaker), Neighbours (Network 10/Fremantle Media), Five Bedrooms (Network Ten/Hoodlum) and as script co-ordinator for both seasons of hit Network Ten drama Playing for Keeps (Network 10/Screentime), Bad Mothers (Channel Nine/Jungle) and Informer 3838 (Channel Nine/Screentime). She has also written the six part companion web series for both Season 1 & 2 of Playing for Keeps (Tenplay)

She recently created and co-wrote Liberty St, an anthology series shot in the depths of lockdown and isolation with The Corinthian Food Store. 

​

She still occasionally writes from the perspective of her cat.
